Issue 7.1

Bishop Edward King Chapel, Ripon College, Oxfordshire

The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) set up a competition in 2009 for the design of a new College Chapel in Oxfordshire, won by Niall McLaughlin Architects, supported by Price & Myers Consulting Engineers and Synergy Consulting Engineers. In the words of the competition brief, the requirement was “an outstanding design to relay the experience of the presence of the holy; a place of personal encounter with the numinous.” The competition-winning design created a space for a personal encounter with the holy for residents and visitors to the college.
