Application of Topology Optimization as a Form-Finding Method in Architectural Design, A Case Study: Pardisan Urban Footbridge

This paper proposes a framework to integrate Topology Optimization (TO) techniques into the architectural design by presenting a case study for the design of an urban footbridge. TO methods have gained popularity in several industrial sectors thanks to manufacturing and computational technology advancements. However, their applicability in architectural design could be improved by the indeterminacy of the final shapes produced by TO and their correlation with the initial design parameters. The unique form of the footbridge and its structural elements make it a suitable candidate for this study. The paper further outlines the design and implementation of the framework, including the application of TO and the subsequent refinement of the resulting form to meet the project’s functional and aesthetic requirements.
