Planning with Generative AI for Creativity, Global Insight, and Fairness

Some consider urban planning a rigid and methodical discipline bound by layers of bureaucracy, regulations, and tradition. It is a field often constrained by the necessity to adhere to established norms and practices, leaving little room for bold creativity or speculative thinking. The complex web of zoning laws, political considerations, and public opinion often means that urban planners work within strict limits, relying on tools and approaches that have evolved relatively slowly. This rigidity can feel stifling in a world where cities are growing more complex, and challenges like climate change, housing crises, and transportation inefficiencies demand fresh solutions.

Enter Generative AI (or GenAI)—a potential disruptor capable of challenging this status quo. As AI technologies rapidly evolve, these tools will transform planning practice in a variety of ways. GenAI has already made waves in fields like design, art, entertainment, engineering, medicine, and the military, enabling professionals to explore new ideas and possibilities that were previously unimaginable quickly. For urban planners, GenAI offers an opportunity to break free from conventional planning constraints and embrace a more creative, innovative, and dynamic future.
